After eight episodes of their second season, Batwoman recast the function of Kate Kane in a surprise expose on Sunday night. The departure of Ruby increased from Batwoman was also a surprise back when she very first left. Yet, the decision to cast a new Batwoman who is an original character implied the show wished to relocation ahead in a new direction. However, the primary driving force of the show has been the browse for Rose’s character, Kate Kane. Well, in the final moments of the most recent episode, Wallis Day was exposed to be the recast Kate Kane, just as the rest of the characters on Batwoman have seemingly made peace with her death. It’s a really baffling turn of events, both from a narrative and show company point-of-view.

When Batwoman very first premiered, there was a great deal of backlash. Some didn’t like the overtly “girl-power” marketing. Others didn’t like that Ruby increased wasn’t actually a Jewish lesbian like the character. Later, during the season, she experienced an injury that led to spinal surgery. When increased lastly spoke out about leaving the show, her answers weren’t clear. She took another run at it, and tossed the COVID-19 pandemic in as another factor. just recently, she dodged a concern about whether or not she’d return as Kate Kane while doing press for another film. Showrunner Carlone Dries spoke out about not recasting Kate Kane, which made it seem like there was an opening for Rose. If there ever was an opening for her return, it’s closed now, too.

Dries spoke about her decision to recast Kate Kane on Batwoman will Wallis Day. She defended her decision to not instantly recast.

From Variety.com:

“Dries toyed with the concept of recasting her best away but eventually altered her mind and chose to introduce a new character — Ryan — instead because she believed ‘it would have been a clunky shift between season 1 and season 2 if we had just full-blown recast Kate without any organic story behind it,’ she says. But, in the back of her mind, she always organized to bring her back in a new method because she was not killing off the character.”

As is custom in the saga, this answer doesn’t state much nor does it make a great deal of sense. One would believe it would be simpler to recast and not state anything (see: Don Cheadle and mark Ruffalo in the MCU) than introduce a new, original character. To belabor the suspected death of Kate Kane only to bring her back is similarly questionable.  Kane’s journey throughout the rest of the season will occur parallel to the rest of the cast’s. One has to assume those paths will ultimately meet.

While the decision to recast Kate Kane this late confuses me, the show itself is still a great deal of fun. Javicia Leslie is a great Batwoman, with a compelling sufficient story to make me material to fail to remember Kate altogether.

While it’s uncertain if Wallis Day will ever fit up as Batwoman, she does have roots with another DC series. She played Nyssa-Vex on SyFy’s Krypton, a political operator who also might kick ass when necessary. I am interested to see what she brings to Kane’s character.
